This is added specifically for the QPA platform and theme plugins, to
honor the QT_QPA_PLATFORM_PLUGIN_PATH environment variable and the
(inadvisable) -platformpluginpath command-line argument.
This removes the last QFactoryLoader used with an empty path (also the
only two that could be reached), which were causing a scan of the
application's binary directory whenever the platform plugin path was
set. In case of applications installed to /usr/bin, the entire /usr/bin

specifically asked for alignof(void*), so tell it not to sanitize the
address of the plugin object. Tested with Clang 12 and 13.
GCC seems not to be affected, even when ASan is enabled.
If this doesn't work, we may need to accept reading a note that is
improperly aligned. I don't think the output will be actually a correct
note because the intra-note alignment will be wrong (I carefully chose
the ELF note name so it would not require alignment, but that's only
valid up to 8-byte alignments).

A few systems, like OpenWRT, may strip the section table off the
resulting binaries (see [1]), making it impossible for us to pinpoint
the exact location of the Qt plugin metadata. This commit moves the meta
data to a location that is identifiable even in fully stripped binaries:
an ELF note.
By naming our section ".note.qt.metadata", we instruct the linker to
place it along the other notes and to mark it in the program header
section. Another advantage is that the notes are usually in the very
beginning of the file, as they are used by the dynamic linker itself, so
we'll need to read much less of the full contents.
The unit test is modified not to attempt to strip the plugin of
debugging data. In fact, we add something to the end that would,
otherwise, be matched as (invalid) metadata.
The following was produced with GCC 11 and GNU binutils ld 2.36.1.
Section Headers:
[Nr] Name Type Addr Off Size ES Flags Lk Inf Al

The Qt metadata note is 4-byte aligned and can thus be found in the
second note section, which spans from 0x02d8 to 0x02d8+0xac=0x0384.
GNU readelf -n can even show it:
Displaying notes found in: .note.qt.metadata
Owner Data size Description
qt-project! 0x0000018f Unknown note type: (0x74510001)
description data: 01 06 03 81 bf ...... ff
I chose 0x7451 as the prefix for our notes, even though they're already
namespaced by the owner in the first place, because eu-readelf
mistakenly tries to interpret note 1 as a GNU ABI tag regardless of
owner. The owner name was chosen to be 12 bytes long, so the ELF note
header is 24 bytes in total. There's no space wasted because the payload
needs to be aligned to 32-bit anyway and I didn't want to use only 4
characters (header total size 16 bytes) so we'd skip the "GNU" note on
size, without string comparison. And I couldn't think of a 4-character
representative string ("QtP" ?).

This rewrite uses the actual structures supplied by the system's C
library, so it should be easier to read. It removes hardcoded constants
with little evident meaning in favor of sizeof() and the macros from
that header. It also removes advancing the data pointer in favor of
having absolute offsets.
The resulting implementation is stricter than the original, checking
more fields in the header. Because the QPluginLoader and QFactoryLoader
users may make decisions based on availability of plugins before
attempting to load them, it's better to be stricter here than to fail
later when trying to dlopen() them.
Debugging and testing are much improved. Instead of stored artifacts, I
added a routine to modify a valid plugin to make it invalid, given the
conditions we've found so far.

parser had an optional QLibrary pointer (which was never null) where to

QString. So make both of them take a single in/out QString pointer,
which has the file name on input and is cheap for us because of COW.

The multi-state return code was a legacy of how Arvid wrote the ELF
parser code back in the day, the fact that it scanned for two different
types of plugins in Qt 4 and that the metadata could exist in different
places. None of that matters nowadays: who cares if the file is a
corrupt binary, not a valid binary, does not have the right
architecture, or has no suitable section? It's not a plugin, period.
The Qt 4 plugin mechanism was removed for Qt 5.0 in commit

When assigning multiple variables to a specific section, both GCC
and Clang legitimately error out if those variables wouldn't end
up in the same section (e.g. if one of them is going to a read-only
section while the other one is going to a read-write section).
In C++, when a seemingly const variable needs dynamic initialization,
it needs to be stored in a read-write section.
Clang 13 changed internals for how some constants are materialized.
Now, when a variable is initialized with an expression containing
plain old fashioned casts, it is considered to be potentially
runtime initialized (at the point when section assignment conflicts
is evaluated). Therefore, Clang 13 errors out on fakeplugin.cpp
with errors like:
fakeplugin.cpp:36:39: error: 'message' causes a section type conflict with 'pluginSection'
QT_PLUGIN_METADATA_SECTION const char message[] = "QTMETADATA";
^
fakeplugin.cpp:32:40: note: declared here
QT_PLUGIN_METADATA_SECTION void *const pluginSection = (void*)(0xc0ffeec0ffeeL);
^
See https://bugs.llvm.org/show_bug.cgi?id=51442 for discussion
on the matter in Clang.
To simplify things, just initialize the fake pointers as regular
uintptr_t instead, avoiding the whole matter. This produces the
exact same contents in the section as before.
For what it's worth, the actual manually constructed metadata in
fakeplugin.cpp doesn't seem to have any effect on running the
QPluginLoader tests on either ELF or MachO right now.

The requirement to separate debug and release DLLs on Windows stems from
the Visual Studio C run-time library appearing in two different variants
(debug and release) and not mixing well. It's possible to perform builds
without optimzations and with debug symbols while linking against the
release version of the C run-time, but at the same time the debug
version of the run-time brings other developer visible advantages.
MinGW on the other hand does not have this distinction, does not ship
with separate DLLS and does also not require the VS C runtime library.
Therefore we do not need this separation for MinGW, which means that our
packages can be reduced in size and application developers wishing to
debug their applications do not have to use debug builds of the Qt
libraries or run into Qt internal debug code.

...not just the debug flag. The information is saved outside of the CBOR
map for two reasons:
1) removing the hack that depended on how QCborStreamWriter and
TinyCBOR internally work, allowing for the extra parameter to be
written directly. We wouldn't be able to use that hack anyway and would
have needed a further, uglier hack to encode a byte whose value we
don't know.
2) outside the map, this information can be parsed more quickly and
then we can discard any plugins we shouldn't actually load.
Since we're doing this for a flag, I decided to move the Qt version

that was applied in commit e211ab76d7.
As for the memory mapping technique, this commit limits the allocation
to reasonable values given the virtual memory addressing space. Half a
gigabyte is probably acceptable on 32-bit systems, where there should be
a contiguous space for the OS to allocate the file in. This commit also
fixes an overflow when converting from qint64 of the file size to ulong

For 64-bit systems, we currently limit to 1 TB.

This test executable was not flaky in the normal sense that when run, it
sometimes passes and sometimes fails. Instead, in some builds it would fail
consistently and in some builds it would pass consistently.
The first test to fail was version(ok00, default to last version) which gives
"mylib" as the library name and -1 as the library version. The description
implies that QLibrary selects the biggest or last used version when given -1.
However, versions less than 0 are not used at all. Instead the loading uses only
the name to select the library. Change the description to match.
So why did the test sometimes pass, sometimes fail? The test uses two library
projects lib and lib2 which install two different major versions of libmylib.
That includes the symbolic links:
libmylib.so -> libmylib.so.1.0.0*
libmylib.so.1 -> libmylib.so.1.0.0*
libmylib.so.1.0 -> libmylib.so.1.0.0*
libmylib.so.1.0.0*
libmylib.so -> libmylib.so.2.0.0*
libmylib.so.2 -> libmylib.so.2.0.0*
libmylib.so.2.0 -> libmylib.so.2.0.0*
libmylib.so.2.0.0*
The key thing being that both set the libmylib.so symbolic link. In a
multithreaded installation it's undefined which happens to set the link last.
The test code expected libmylib.so to point to libmylib.so.2.0.0. Ensure that by
building and installing lib2 after lib.

Usually, when you load a plugin, you don't want to load just any plugin
that fulfills a given interface, but rather a specific one. When loading
dynamic plugins you can differentiate the plugins by file name. This
doesn't work in the static case, and file names are also separate from
the plugin metadata shipped inside the plugin files.
To solve this problem, different hacks have been developed in various
places. QML extension plugins add a special property "uri" via the -M
option of moc, QML debug plugins expect you to add a json file with
an array of "Keys", Qt Creator plugins have a "Name" in their json
files, etc.
By allowing the identifier for the plugin to be specified inline with
the metadata declaration we can make many of the above workarounds
obsolete and provide a clean way for users to find their plugins.

As for the formatting code, de-duplicate the parsing code by only
parsing char*s, converting QChars to Latin-1 first in a small buffer.
The QUuid(const char*) ctor performed no length checking, relying
instead on the checks performed within _q_uuidFromHex(), which
includes an implicit check for premature end (because NUL is not
a valid token for the parser).
The (QString) and (QByteArray) ctors did perform length checking.
To the extent possible, this is removed, since it is handled by
_q_uuidFromHex(). Failure cases need not be optimized. Only the
QLatin1String overload needs to do some checking, because views in
general are not NUL-terminated. The QStringView overload can just
append a NUL when it converts to Latin-1.
The only check I added to _q_uuidFromHex() is that for src ==
nullptr. It would otherwise be duplicated in several callers.
While touching the internal functions, port to passing and returning
by value.
