[ChangeLog][QTestLib] QCOMPARE now evaluates toString() on its
arguments lazily, speeding up the general case where the comparison
doesn't fail. This is true for the QCOMPARE functionality provided
by Qt. If you specialized qCompare() for your own types, then you
need to change its implementation in line with Qt's own qCompare()
specializations in order to enable this feature.
[ChangeLog][QTestLib] QCOMPARE calls with nullptr argument(s) will
now print the actual and expected values upon failure.
Previously it was not like that because of the compareHelper()
overload in qtestresult.cpp that treated the presence of
nullptr-arguments as a reason to ignore formatFailMessage() call.
New implementation does not have this check, and correctly
executes formatFailMessage() for all arguments.
Note that the qCompare() overloads that call QTestResult::compare()
internally were not affected by this patch, because they already
defer toString() invocation until the comparison fails.
Some numbers, collected against shared release developer build.
I checked how this change affects the test execution. The idea was
to pick some tests for types that do not have a specific
QTestResult::compare overload, so I picked a couple of QByteArray
tests.
The comparison is done by running a test 10 times and taking the
average execution duration, as reported in the log.

The compare() implementation made its actual and expected seem to have
different types (using a typedef name for one, when the other was of
the type that expands to) and the formatter it used was needlessly
clunky. Use modern string literals and package a repeated
null-or-quoted representation as a lambda, inline the resulting
simplified prettyElement() into prettyPair(), which can now just take
a pair rather than an iterator. Short-cut the empty list so that the
comma-joined accumulation could initialize with the first entry and
loop over the rest, always joining with a comma.

On 32-bit platforms, the range of qsizetype is smaller than the range
of the qint64 used as a parameter in seek().
When seek()ing beyond the current buffer's size, the old code relied
on a write() to fill the gap with NUL bytes. This has two problems:
First, this may allocate a huge amount of memory just to find that it
cannot write that much, possibly even taking the program down when the
allocation in the QByteArray ctor fails, instead of returning false from
seek().
Second, the QByteArray ctor to which we pass the gapSize only takes
qsizetype, not qint64, so we were writing data of size gapSize mod
(INT_MAX+1) on 32-bit platforms, which may succeed, just to find that
that wasn't the number of bytes we expected to be written. By that
time, however, the internal buffer has already been enlarged.
Fix by checking whether the desired seek position is within the limits
that QByteArray can contain early on, before attempting to construct
such a large QByteArray.

... in preparation for replacing the QString keys in the public API
with QAnyStringView ones.
This removes the "important optimization" that avoids a detach in the
common case where the input is the same as the output of
normalization. But that optimization is beside the point, because it
trades a memory allocation avoided in the library for O(N) allocations
inserted into user code for each call to QSettings::value(), the vast
majority of which are calls with string literals.
With the public interface ported to QAnyStringView in the follow-up
patch, we can then internally optimize memory allocations _in a central
place_ (e.g. by returning std::u16string or QVarLengthArray<QChar> from
normalizeKey() instead of QString). But first we need to get rid of all
the unwarranted allocations in user code.

The documentation for QProcessEnvironment's default constructor
says:
This constructor creates an empty environment. If set on a
QProcess, this will cause the current environment variables
to be removed.
This is not the case however, because setting such an environment
for a process is equivalent to not setting an environment at all
and the child process is executed with parent's environment.
It is still possible starting from Qt 6.2.0 to create an empty
environment by adding a variable to a null environment and removing
it, but that's cumbersome, and the comparison operator says that
it is equal to the null environment but it is obviously behaving in
a different way.
This change adds an additional constructor to QProcessEnvironment
that can be used to construct a null environment, and changes the
default constructor to produce an empty environment. The comparison
operator is changed to correctly distinguish between such objects.
This is a behavior change, but the current behavior is broken
and this is unlikely to affect working code.
[ChangeLog][QtCore][QProcessEnvironment] An additional constructor
was added to explicitly create an object that when set on QProcess
would cause it to inherit the environment from parent (this was
formerly the behavior of a default-constructed QProcessEnvironment,
which will now (as documented) actually give a process an environment
with no variables set). A new method inheritsFromParent() was added
to test for such objects.

The QtTest best practices documentations recommends using output
mechanisms such as qDebug() and qWarning() for diagnostic messages,
and this is also what most of our own tests do.
The QWARN() macro and corresponding internal QTest::qWarn() function
was added when QtTest was first implemented, but was likely meant as
an internal implementation detail, like its cousin QTestLog::info(),
which does not have any corresponding macro.
This theory is backed by our own QtTest self-test (tst_silent)
describing the output from QWARN() as "an internal testlib warning".
The only difference between QWARN() and qWarning(), besides the much
richer feature set of the latter, is that qWarning() will not pass
on file and line number information in release mode, but QWARN() will.
This is an acceptable loss of functionality, considering that the user
can override this behavior by defining QT_MESSAGELOGCONTEXT.
[ChangeLog][QtTest] QWARN() has been deprecated in favor of qWarning()

Before this change, next() was the only way to advance the iterator,
whether the caller was ultimately interested in just the filePath()
(good) or not (bad luck, had to call .fileInfo()).
Add a new function, nextFileInfo(), with returns fileInfo() instead.
Incidentally, the returned object has already been constructed as part
of advance()ing the iterator, so the new function is faster than
next() even if the result is ignored, because we're not calculating a
QString result the caller may not be interested in.
Use the new function around the code.

QSettings encodes QVariants as @Type(data) strings. If that data contains
a null-byte, we write the string as UTF-8 encoded CFData. When reading it
back we look for a @ prefix, and then pass it as UTF-8 through stringToVariant.
The problem arises then the user writes raw QByteArrays with a @ prefix.
We can detect this situation by checking the result of stringToVariant,
and if it's just a simple conversion of the string into a QVariant, we
know that stringToVariant hit its fallback path due to not finding any
embedded variants.
If that's the case, we return the raw bytes as a QByteArray.

For QProcess, there is no point in suppressing recursive
QWPR::readyRead() emission, as the former manages this logic itself. On
top of that, the non-recursive nature of QWPR::readyRead() indirectly
disallowed reading from the channels inside
QProcess::waitForReadyRead(), if that is called from a slot connected
to QProcess::readyRead().
QWPW had two signals, one allowing recursion and one not.
This commit allows recursion of QWPR::readyRead() and
QWPW::bytesWritten(), and moves recursion suppression to the higher-
level classes. This makes the code more uniform and efficient, at the
cost of a few duplicated lines.

These look like leftovers (API flaws).
Construction of QFileInfo from QString (or similar) should be not
implicit, as QFileInfo construction is expensive (might hit the file
system), and this may have users overlook APIs (for instance build a
QFileInfo out of QDirIterator::next(), instead of using ::fileInfo();
using QDir::entryList instead of entryInfoList; etc.).
Leave an opt-out mechanism to ease porting.
Fix a handful of usages around qtbase, with at least a couple of them
likely to be actual "sloppy" code.

QFileInfo constructors are now explicit. The

QChar should not be convertible from any integral type except from
char16_t, short and possibly char (since it's a direct superset).
David provided the perfect example:
if (str == 123) { ~~~ }
compiles, with 123 implicitly converted to QChar (str == "123"
was meant instead). But similarly one can construct other
scenarios where QString(123) gets accidentally used (instead of
QString::number(123)), like QString s; s += 123;.
Add a macro to revert to the implicit constructors, for backwards
compatibility.
The breaks are mostly in tests that "abuse" of integers (arithmetic,
etc.). Maybe it's time for user-defined literals for QChar/QString,
but that is left for another commit.
[ChangeLog][Potentially Source-Incompatible Changes][QChar] QChar
constructors from integral types are now by default explicit.
It is recommended to use explicit conversions, QLatin1Char,
QChar::fromUcs4 instead of implicit conversions. The old behavior
can be restored by defining the QT_IMPLICIT_QCHAR_CONSTRUCTION
macro.

This commit restricts operator<<(QDebug lhs, QVariant rhs) to only work
if rhs is actually of type QVariant (instead of any type convertible to
QVariant). This is especially important as
a) we check in QMetaType whether (slightly simplified) QDebug{} <<
std::declval<T>() is valid, and if so, register a function which
simply uses the operator.
b) In QVariant, we ask the metatype system for the contained types
registered debug function and then use it.
If a type now does not have its own operator<< for QDebug, but is
implicitly convertible to QVariant containing itself, this would lead to
an infinite recursion, when trying to use qDebug with that type. The
registered function in a) would just convert the type to QVariant, and
then ask the QVariant to print itself.
Disallowing implicit conversions in qDebug in general was considered
(i.e. adding template<typename T> operator<<(T) = delete in QDebug ),
but discarded as it breaks too much code relying on conversions.

QString program = args.takeFirst();

with which one can provide code to be run in the Unix child process

necessary to derive from QProcess in order to execute actions in the

Another reason is that we can tell whether the std::function carries a
valid target much more easily than we can tell whether QProcess was
overridden.
The setupChildProcess() virtual function does not need to be marked
final, since no overrider could ever return an inaccessible private

return type, not about attempting to override a final.

* Adjust results to the fact that we don't convert from char

* QStringList->QString requires some adjustments, as we only

to accept std::filesystem::path objects. Currently my thinking is to
not add overloads for static functions where std::filesystem can already
do the same job, e.g. create directory or file.
Template and enable_if is needed due to both QString and
std::filesystem::path being able to be constructed from string literals.
The common shared code is currently in QFile because QDir had an
implicit include of QFile, made explicit in this patch, and QFileInfo
has an include to QFile as well.
The QT_HAS_STD_FILESYSTEM macro is visible in user-code which I
currently take advantage of in the tests, and users could too.

Moving a file to the trash should preferably done via IFileOperation.
However, the implementation on Windows 7 ignores the operation flags
that request the shell not to show any confirmation dialogs or other UI
elements.
SHFileOperation is an old API that doesn't show any UI, but has the
limitation that it doesn't report the location of the file in the trash
after the move. So an application cannot restore the file, but the user
can do so via Explorer.
Overall, the better compromise is to not have dialogs at the expense of
not being able to report the new path. This allows us to run the unit
test on Windows 7 as well.

works for paths that are actually directories.
The test covers files from different locations on which this
operation should typically succeed, but tries to handle the case
where trashing files will fail because of the file system
structure.
On Windows 7, running the test will open a confirmation dialog as
the implementation of IFileOperation doesn't respect the various
flags. This might depend on the specific Windows 7 patch level,
and the option to always use SHFileOperation on that platform needs
to be evaluated further.

Short of bootstrapping much of QtCore into this test case, the only
sensible option is to remove this test case again, and cover the

This implements the operation for Windows, macOS, and Unix, for now
only as a private API (since QFileSystemEngine is private). This adds
the capability as a testable function; public API to be agreed on and
added in a separate commit.
The Unix implementation follows the freedesktop.org specification [1]
version 1.0.
[1] https://specifications.freedesktop.org/trash-spec/trashspec-1.0.html
On macOS and Windows, native APIs are used, with each having some
limitations:
* on macOS, the file in the trash won't have a "put back" option,
as we don't use Finder automation, for the reasons provided in the
comments
* on Windows, we might not be able to use the modern IFileOperation
API, e.g. if Qt is built with mingw which doesn't seem to provide
the interface definition; the fallback doesn't provide access to
the file name in the trash
The test case creates files and directories, and moves them to the
trash. As part of the cleanup routine, it deletes all file system
entries created. If run on Windows without IFileOperations support,
this will add a file in the trash for each test run, filling up
hard drive space.

This saves us from having to bootstrap rcc in regular (non-cross)
compilations, as it can now link to QtCore. Actually un-bootstrapping
rcc is left as an exercise for the reader.
This commit discovered that MSVC cannot handle constexpr arrays bigger
than 256 kB, at which point it simply starts claiming that the constant
expressions using it are not constexpr. ICC has a similar problem at
64 kB, but it tells you why ("note: type "const unsigned char [65537]"
too large for constant-expression evaluation").
Note also that this requires gzip or zstd to be in PATH for compression
to happen. RCC linked to zlib, which is always present due to the
bundled copy. gzip's presence is not likely to be a problem on Unix
systems, but could be for Windows users, especially MSVC ones. If gzip
is not present, QtCore's size will increase by about 1910 kB of
read-only (sharable) data.

it using recursive methods, leading to fatal data loss.
With this change, Qt can identify file system entries as junctions,
allowing applications to use the correct file system operation to
