Allan Sandfeld Jensen 9204b8c31e Register fonts with preferred names on Windows
Looks up the canonical names of enumerated fonts and register them under
their preferred names if present.

Also changes the logic handling registration of english aliases, so it
is always done, even if it might in rare cases cause a double
registration since that is safe.

Eskil Abrahamsen Blomfeldt 95d1273548 Windows: Don't claim bitmap fonts support all standard sizes
We were throwing away important information by claiming that all
fonts support all the standard sizes in QFontDatabase on Windows
This caused the font dialog to list unsupported sizes for bitmap
fonts, unlike the native font dialog.

We would also claim to support creating bitmap fonts at
unsupported sizes, which would lead to
1. QFontInfo(font).pointSize() would return the requested size,
not the actual rendered size.
2. Bitmap fonts created at 64 pixels and higher would be invisible.

On Mac, there are no system bitmap fonts, and the use is not very
common, but installing some bitmap fonts on the system, it does
seem to ignore the sizes supported in the font and just displays
the standard list instead, so we keep the current behavior there.

[ChangeLog][QtGui][Text] Fixed list of supported sizes for
bitmap fonts on Windows.

In change ce2ae6ebd8 we added support for

use the DirectWrite engine for all text rendering in high-dpi and assume
we would get only vertical hinting, but since the default changed, we
ended up scaling hinted text and the resulting text layouts were a mess.

Oswald Buddenhagen f25afef61d rely on transitive library dependencies for freetype/fontconfig
so far, we have been delaying the linking, because we didn't want to
make the monolithic platformsupport module pull in spurious
dependencies. however, now that the module was split, there is no need
to play such games any more.

a nice effect of this is that the hideous qpa/*unixfontdatabase.prf
files disappear, and finally freetype_dependency.pri also becomes
trivial and is thus inlined.

Eskil Abrahamsen Blomfeldt 3ce07c3238 Fix Myanmar text with some fonts
In change db2764db34, we introduced
the requirement of having specific OpenType tables available
to certain fonts. Before, we would not require OpenType support
to use a font for Myanmar text, for instance, since this was
not listed as one of the languages requiring OpenType support.
This patch simply brings back the limitation that fonts are only
disqualified by missing tables if the language is one of the
ones we know to require OpenType.

[UIFont familyNames] will return a list of fonts that include the fonts
Telugu Sangam MN, Heiti SC, Heiti TC, and Bangla Sangam MN, but when
calling [UIFont fontNamesForFamilyName:] for these fonts we get an
empty list.

The problem appeared when we tried to then populate these fonts, as
CTFontDescriptorCreateMatchingFontDescriptors() would return a list
of font descriptors from the PingFang SC font when called with
NSFontFamilyAttribute = "Heiti SC". This is due to PingFang being a
replacement for Heiti in later iOS versions.

Mike Krus 03e9c6f4a6 Add support for Apple tvOS
Pass -xplatform macx-tvos-clang to configure to build.
Builds device and simulator by default.

Added ‘uikit’ platform with the common setup.
Also added QT_PLATFORM_UIKIT define (undocumented).
qmake config defines tvos (but not ios).

tvOS is 64bits only (QT_ARCH is arm64) and requires bitcode to be
embedded in the binary. A new ‘bitcode’ configuration was added.
For ReleaseDevice builds (which get archived and push to the store),
bitcode is actually embedded (-fembed-bitcode passed to clang). For all
other configurations, only using bitcode markers to keep file size
down (-fembed-bitcode-marker).

Build disables Widgets in qtbase, and qtscript (unsupported,
would require fixes to JavaScriptCore source code).

Qpa same as on iOS but disables device orientation, status bar, clipboard,
menus, dialogs which are not supported on tvOS.

Gabriel de Dietrich c35795b413 QFontEngine: Add handle() function
Both QFont::handle() and QFont::freetypeFace() used to
be available in Qt 4 but were removed in Qt 5. There's
currently no API to get access to the native font handle,
which the font engine holds in a way or another.

Similar to the way it was in Qt 4, the actual handle type
depends on the font engine currently in use. The types map
as follows:

     Font Engine Native Handle
    ------------------------------------
     DirectWrite IDWriteFontFace *
     Freetype FT_Face
     Mac CTFontRef
     Win HFONT

All other font engines return a null handle.

Marc Mutz 6417bbde85 QtBase (remainder): use printf-style qWarning/qDebug where possible (I)
The printf-style version of QDebug expands to a lot less code than the
std::ostream-style version. Of course, you pay in type safety (but
compilers warn about it these days), you cannot stream complex Qt
types and streaming QStrings is awkward, but in many cases you
actually improve on readability.

But the main reason is that something that's not supposed to be
executed under normal operation has no business bloating executable
code size.

This is not an attempt at converting all qWarnings() to printf-style,
only the low-hanging fruit.

In this first part, replace
   qWarning() << ""
with
   qWarning("...").

Had to fix broken qImDebug() definition. Instead of defining it as
a nullary macro in the QT_NO_DEBUG case and as a variadic macro in
the other, define it in both cases, as is customary, as a non-function
macro so that overload selection works without requiring variadic
macro support of the compiler.

Saves e.g. ~250b in text size in QtPrintSupport on optimized GCC 5.3
AMD64 builds.

Eskil Abrahamsen Blomfeldt 50cd0daf29 Fix kerned advances in QRawFont on OS X and Windows
On Windows, the wrong value was used to calculate the
design-to-device scale. The assumption has been that tmHeight
in the TEXTMETRIC is the pixel size of the em square, but
it is not, it's the height of the font (ascent + descent).
The pixel size of the font is defined to be the em square size
in pixels.

On OS X, the kerning data was never actually read from the
font. I've added a lazy initialization for this similar to
the one in the FT engine.

This was discovered when investigating QTBUG-48546, as it turned
out that the kerning information extracted by Qt in this case was
different from the one used by Harfbuzz.

I've changed testfont.ttf to kern "_2" so that the digit is positioned
directly on top of the underscore and constructed a test.

[ChangeLog][QRawFont] Fixed kerning on advances in QRawFont for
OS X and Windows.

The pixel size passed into QCoreTextFontDatabase::fontEngine() has already
been scaled to take the destination DPI into account. In the normal case
the destination DPI is the same as the screen's logical DPI, 72, and we
end up with the pixel size being equal to the point size. But when the
Qt::AA_Use96Dpi flag has been set, e.g. when running tests, the pixel
size is larger than the point size, and we need to pass this information
to CoreText, otherwise we end up with clipped text rendering. This was
evident when looking at the lancelot baselines for OS X, which are
produced using QTestLib, and hence run with Qt::AA_Use96Dpi set.

The logic used in the FreeType font engine can be generalized
and move to the QFontEngine baseclass. This allows the CoreText
font engine to correctly report the minimum left/right bearings,
which decreases the chance that an optimization in QTextLayout's
line breaking algorithm will produce wrong results.

The calculation of left and right bearing has been moved to the
glyph_metrics_t type to reduce code duplication. This allows us
to use the with and height of the bounding box to determine if
the glyph has any contours.

Font hinting is done in the Qt coordinate system, and ends up
looking very wrong if the painter is scaled. Now that high-DPI
scaling is cross platform, we can move the responsibility for
turning off hinting out of the platform plugin.

Note that we cannot change our minds later, since Qt does not have
a reference to all objects that perform text layout. Therefore, we
turn off hinting if and only if there is at least one screen with
scaling enabled at application startup. If this is not good enough
for you, you should disable scaling and support resolution independence
manually.

Eskil Abrahamsen Blomfeldt c29c6d9003 OS X: Fix mixing writing systems, ligatures and text formatting
In QFontEngineMulti::stringToCMap() we call the primary engine's
implementation of the same function. If this engine does not support
the character in question, then it's supposed to clear the glyph array,
otherwise there may be left-over junk in the glyph array from previous
script items and the font selection algorithm will think it has already
found a match for the character corresponding to the glyph position.
The freetype engine, for instance, clears the respective entries
in the array when it gets a 0 glyph from the font engine.

In particular, this would happen when you had a ligature preceding
an item that was shaped separately. The ligature (e.g. "fi") would
set the first two slots of the glyph array, but later replace
them with a single glyph. The next item would then get an offset
of 1, i.e. pointing to the position in the glyph array where the
glyph for i was originally contained. If this was not cleared,
it would assume the primary engine supported the character. If
the character was of an unsupported writing system, then you would
get a box in place of it instead.

[ChangeLog][OS X][Text] Fixed appending text with a different
writing system and formatting to a latin ligature.

Eskil Abrahamsen Blomfeldt 586fd04234 OS X/iOS: Fix stretched font rendering
Setting the stretch of a QFont did not work correctly on OS X or

Two things are needed to make it work: First of all, we need to
properly set the transform when creating the CTFont.

In addition, we need to manually scale the advances, as
CTRunGetPositions() does not do this for us. On OS X 10.6, however,
there was a regression and CTRunGetPositions() would return scaled
positions, so we exclude the step to scale the advances on this
particular version.

Eskil Abrahamsen Blomfeldt a614bc6e39 Cocoa: Always add Arial Unicode MS to fallback list
The fallbacks on the platform should ideally contain all fonts that
support the script passed in, but this would require populating the
font database and checking the unicode ranges for all fonts, so it
would cause a significant performance hit on Mac. What we do here
instead is just return a set of default fonts as the fallbacks
and disregard the requested script.

The consequence of this is that some special unicode codepoints were
not supported on Mac, because we weren't working with a full fallback
list.

To rectify this without breaking performance, we always add Arial
Unicode MS to the end of the fallback list as a final fallback.
This should always be present on the system and has a wide support
of different scripts.

[ChangeLog][OS X][Fonts] Fixed missing glyph box shown in place of some
uncommon Unicode code points.

Eskil Abrahamsen Blomfeldt 8610534f53 OSX: Properly detect language support in fonts
The language support detection in Cocoa does not report the correct
set of languages for all fonts. One consequence of this is that e.g.
Mkhedruli (Georgian) was not supported on Mac because the
'ka' language code was not reported for e.g. the Arial Unicode MS
font.

This was never detected in Qt 4, because the writing system support
we set for each font was never used for font matching, since we let
CoreText do the matching in Qt 4.

To remedy this, we also detect writing system support based on the OS/2
table in the font. We add this in addition to the current test in case
the language list has information about fonts with incomplete OS/2 tables,
to avoid regressing.

[ChangeLog][OS X] Fixed detection of writing system support in fonts for
some scripts such as Mkhedruli.

Gabriel de Dietrich 909d3f5c73 Font Database: Add support for private, system UI font families
We introduce QPlatformFontDatabase::isPrivateFontFamily() to allow
testing for private, system UI font families. Both QFontComboBox
and QFontDialog need to filter out those private font families
which, by definition, should be hidden from the end user.

(The textedit example had to be updated to fix the issue where the
default font would be private. In 5.4, we will be adding an equivalent,
public API in QFontDatabase, and a better solution for the textedit
example and QTexEdit in general).

In particular, on OS X and iOS, private fonts are used for the system
UI font. Those have their font family name prefixed by a dot.
QCoreTextFontDatabase knows about this, and makes sure those are
tested positive as private font families. In order to have a cleaner
layer separation, we moved the QPA theme font resolution from the
platform theme classes into QCoreTextFontDatabase for both Cocoa and
iOS QPA plugins.

In both cases, we use CoreText's CTFontCreateUIFontForLanguage(), that
nicely maps to the HITheme API we were using so far on Mac. That means
one HITheme dependency less. We also cache the font descriptors we get
for these font for each time QCTFD::populateFamilies() gets called.
(While not common, this currently happens in auto-tests, like
tst_QFontDatabase, and could happen in actual applications -- specially
when adding and removing application fonts.)

Fabian Bumberger 74cade1ee4 Fix application font removal when using FontConfig
This patch fixes an issue when a font that was added with
QFontDatabase::addApplicationFont can not be removed any more.
The reason for that is that QFontconfigDatabase::addApplicationFont
adds the font to the FontConfig application set from where it
cannot be removed any more and is picked up every time the font database
is repopulated (e.g. after a call to QFontDatabase::removeApplicationFont).

This also fixes the QFontDatabase autotest which unfortunately does
not fail on linux, because it tries to add "FreeMono" (which in most
cases is already there as a system font). So this patch removes FreeMono
and adds LED_REAL as test font.

Tor Arne Vestbø 2bc7a40048 Teach font database to populate families lazily
Instead of requiring that QPlatformFontDatabase::populateFontDatabase()
populates every single font in the system by calling registerFont(), we
now allow the platform database to call registerFontFamily() instead, and
then keep track of which families we've yet to fully populate in the font
database.

Once a property of a family is requested (such as its writing system,
style, etc), the family is lazily populated by calling back to the
platform database through QPlatformFontDatabase::populateFamily(),
which in turn does the final call to registerFont() as before.

This cuts application startup on OS X and iOS (of which the font population
used to be a major limiting factor) from roughly one second to about 350ms.

Tor Arne Vestbø c466f2ed46 Remove need to populate font database on OS X to get fallback families
Populating the whole database takes a while, and it's very easy to trigger
the fallback family code path through eg. matching or getting the default
font family from QFont.

Instead of relying on populate to resolve family name to a PostScript name
(which was required when using CTFontCreateWithName), we instead use the
CTFontDescriptorCreateWithAttributes() function to create a descriptor
based on the family name, and then use CTFontCreateWithFontDescriptor().

The other way around, we use CTFontDescriptorCreateWithNameAndSize, and
then pull out the family name from the descriptor. The need for creating
a CTFont for private fonts (eg '.Apple Symbols Fallback') does not seem
necessary anymore, as tested on 10.7-10.9.

The disadvantage of creating font descriptors instead of re-using the
data computed by population is that we're doing the same work twice,
but the end result is making the font database more lazy, and the 80%
use-case is assumed to be that you're only interested in the fallback
of a small number of fonts, which means you don't want to populate all
of the fonts in the system (taking about 1100ms on the test system).
Looking up the fallback of a single family or style now takes about
15-25ms.

Tor Arne Vestbø 3fec94fd07 Prevent repeated and unnecessary font population QCoreTextFontDatabase
The platform font database is populated from QFontDatabase, through the
static initializeDb() function, whenever the font database determines
that the platform database has not been initialized (by checking if the
font database is empty).

There are other clients of QPlatformFontDatabase though, such as QFont,
which uses the platform font database to check for the default family.
The CoreText implementation of determining the default family relies
on data that is computed during font population, and hence does an
internal (self-triggered) populate.

To prevent repeated populates as a result of calling QFont::defaultFamily()
we guard the populate by a similar isEmpty() check as QFontDatabase does,
but to ensure that this check works in the case of an invalidated font
database, we need to propagate the font database invalidation down to
the platform font database.
