Stephen Kelly d9fb6e6dbb Remove use of 'register' from Qt.
It is deprecated and clang is starting to warn about it.

Patch mostly generated by clang itself, with some careful grep
and sed for the platform-specific parts.

Tor Arne Vestbø 46667d604f Fix crash when re-creating QThreadData after initially destroying it
We destroy the thread data for the main thread when the QCoreApplication
is destructed, and then delete the pthread key for the thread data in
the global static destructor function 'destroy_current_thread_data_key'.

The user may have its own Q_DESTRUCTOR_FUNCTION though, which may or may
not run after we've destroyed the key. If it runs after we've destroyed
the key, we'll end up trying to re-create the tread-data, as expected,
but set_thread_data() will fail to persist it, as pthread_setspecific
is called with an invalid key. The result is an infinite recursion:

To solve this, we reset current_thread_data_once when destroying the key,
so that subsequent calls to pthread_once to potentially create the key
will call create_current_thread_data_key once more. This means we'll leak
the key for this particular use-case, since we don't end up calling
pthread_key_delete a second time, but this leak is small and happens
typically only for a short duration during application shutdown.

Thiago Macieira 6c98035c99 QThreadPool: Fix regression from Qt 4 in dealing with priority starts
The optimisation done in cbaf52b099 for Qt
5.0 got the order wrong of the comparison. The queue must be sorted in
decreasing priority order. But since higher numbers mean higher
priority, that means the queue must be sorted in decreasing priority
number order.

Olivier Goffart 529b648ece Fix possible race in QMutex
As described in the QTBUG-30872, there may be a race condition involving
3 threads fighting for a mutex.  I am surprised it was not caught
before despite all the Q_ASSERT and the stress test in tst_qmutex.

We do not need to call store(0) because the unlocking thread will
eventually remove the BigNumber flag. And perhaps it even did it
already, and another thread has incremented waiters (hence the Q_ASSERT
is wrong)

Here is a paste of part of the description from the bug report:

many threads, one of them is ready to release mutex, while at least two other trying to acquire it
d->waiters is 0
Thread 1 release mutex in unlockInternal:

   if (d->waiters.fetchAndAddRelease(-QMutexPrivate::BigNumber) == 0)

d->waiters is now -QMutexPrivate::BigNumber
Thread 2 try to acquire mutex in lockInternal:

   old_waiters = d->waiters.load();
   if (old_waiters == -QMutexPrivate::BigNumber) {
   if (d_ptr.testAndSetAcquire(d, dummyLocked())) {

It acquire 'about to release mutex' by changing d to dummyLocked
Thread 1 continue release procedure:

   d->derefWaiters(0);

d->waiters is now back to 0
Thread 3 try to acquire mutex in lockInternal:

    while (!d->waiters.testAndSetRelaxed(old_waiters, old_waiters + 1));

d->waiters is now 1
Thread 2 continue its dummy lock:

    d->waiters.store(0);

d->waiters is force to 0

Thread 3 continue wait procedure
but it realize that mutex was already unlocked so decrease back waiters

   if (old_waiters != QMutexPrivate::BigNumber) {
   d->waiters.deref();

d->waiters became negative value of -1
Neither thread need internal data so it is released back to pool
The waiters counter in released internal structure is still -1

Thiago Macieira ccb7db2ee3 Document that the mutex passed to QWaitCondition::wait must be locked
Simply say that the behaviour is undefined if you don't do what you must
do. I don't want to introduce a check: it can't be done reliably anyway.

Jan Kundrát cc38a1eee8 Fix C++11 support in clang prior to 3.2
The comments in this file suggested that the bug was only present in clang/3.1.
However, qRegisterMetaType was failing even on clang 3.2
("tags/RELEASE_32/final"). The clang's bugzilla says [1] that the problem was
fixed two days before the release of 3.2, but apparently it didn't make it to
the release branch.

Thiago Macieira dcf9c403ba Use Bionic's __pthread_cond_timedwait_relative
The Linux futex interface uses relative timeouts anyway, so this avoids
a double round-trip through clock_gettime: once in Qt code to calculate
absolute from relative and once in libc for reversing.

Glibc does not offer such a function because its pthread_cond objects
use a kernel interface that works on absolute times.

Thiago Macieira 786c790176 Fix build on Android: libpthread is deficient and lacks functions
Even if the monotonic clock is available, Android's Bionic lacks the
pthread_condattr_setclock function, so we can't tell it to use the
monotonic clock.

David Faure d4adee7851 Fix race condition in QThread::setPriority
The value of priority was read without the mutex locked, from within
the thread.

Had to extract a QThreadPrivate::setPriority method so that it can be called
with the mutex already locked. So if the main thread calls setPriority
while the thread is starting, it will be either be before or after the
"re-set priority" code at thread startup, but at least not in the middle of it.

Oswald Buddenhagen 096e32d814 simplify/fix QT_BOOTSTRAPPED-related #ifdefs
don't test for building specific tools when we actually only want to
know whether we are bootstrapping. so far, this was only redundant; with
the upcoming change of not bootstrapping unnecessarily it would be
outright broken.

Tor Arne Vestbø d28073d9eb Distinguish between 'mac' and 'macx' qmake scopes
The former applies both on Mac OS X and iOS, but 'macx' is specific to
Mac OS X.

ios.conf and macx.conf now share most of their settings in the common
mac.conf. We set the default QMAKE_MAC_SDK before loading mac.conf, so
that any overrides in the device config will apply afterwards. This
means configure's mkspec parsing will be able to read the QMAKE_MAC_SDK.

Thiago Macieira d93b2ef968 Mark all qtbase headers that aren't clean
QtCore has a few headers that, though public, aren't meant to be
included directly. Those are the atomic headers, the three _impl.h
headers and qt_windows.h.

QtGui includes two OpenGL headers that don't compile on their own.

Other libraries should not have headers like that (but they do,
something we need to fix eventually).

Olivier Goffart 91e12dca75 QThread documentation: do not discourage the reimplementation of QThread
The new QThread documentation now really discourage to reimplement
QThread. But in fact, there are many cases where it is perfectly fine.
And the example given is even a case where using worker object is wrong.
The examle even contains a leak since the thread will never stop and
will even leak.

This changes put back some sentences from before commit
d4ad9dbbf9.

The sample code has been re-writen. Notice how reimpementing run takes
less lines of code, less runtime overhead, no leaks, and also is more
complete than the previous example.

Thiago Macieira 15d7044c82 Set some attributes on pthread condattrs
Make them use the monotonic clock if that's available. On Mac, the
monotonic clock is not available -- Qt fakes monotonic support by using
the Mach timebase -- so we need to use gettimeofday.

In VxWorks set default values for scheduling priority to use
SCHED_FIFO_HIGH_PRI and SCHED_FIFO_LOW_PRI defines for other scheduling

Thiago Macieira a891ef6920 Don't use MPProcessorsScheduled on Mac OS X
It's deprecated and it's not available on iOS anyway. The recommended
way of getting the number of processors online is via sysctl or
sysconf (both of which are just slightly below).

Thiago Macieira 3adbcb58d5 Fix QMutex::tryLock with negative values
The Linux futex implementation had a Q_ASSERT for positive values, but
the documentation says that negative values should be interpreted as
infinite (equal to lock()).

Test that too.

Holger Ihrig dcccf32095 Fixed compatibility problem with Exceptionhandling
When QtBase is compiled with Exeptions it was incompatible
with the other modules compiled with QT_NO_EXCEPTIONS.
This resulted in a linker error with
ExceptionStore::throwPossibleExceptions, one time returning a const value
and the other time without it

Sze Howe Koh d7e8b57d0a Remove the QThread::terminated() signal
The signal is removed from the API; all references to it are removed
from documentation; the unit test that checks for its emission is
modified to listen for QThread::finished() instead.

The QThreadPrivate::terminated flag is also removed, as it served no
purpose other than to trigger the emission of QThread::terminated()

As discussed at http://lists.qt-project.org/pipermail/development/2012-October/007216.html
the signal is not guaranteed to be emitted after every termination,
rendering it useless.

Giuseppe D'Angelo 60e2ec9db4 Workaround MSVC2008 build failure after switching to std::upper_bound
QPostEventList is kept sorted by priority; std::upper_bound
is used to insert a QPostEvent in the right place in the list.

Turns out that MSVC2008 is a bit too picky and tries to see if the
list is actually ordered. This causes a build failure as there is
no operator< defined between two QPostEvents (in fact,
an integer -- the priority -- is passed to std::upper_bound).

Work around this issue by defining operator< between two QPostEvents.

Thiago Macieira 6fd1895b91 Move QRecursiveMutexPrivate to qmutex.cpp and mark inline
Disassembly of the optimised code shows that the compiler was already
inlining the bodies of one or both functions (since they're in the same
.cpp, it's allowed to do that).

However, since there was no "inline" marker, the compiler was also
emitting an out-of-line copy, which wasn't used by anyone, as the class
is not exported.

So add the marker. To make sure that they don't get used by accident
elsewhere, the class is moved to the .cpp file too.

Thiago Macieira fc174a3728 Simplify the futex lock loop: no need for nested while
Once we enter the inner loop, we never exit it except to return from
the lockInternal() function, so the rest is never executed again.

As a consequence of this, we won't try to fastTryLock() twice per
mutex. Therefore, for a non-recursive mutex, if lockInternal() is
entered, we'll definitely need to use futexes.

Thiago Macieira 30bea611df Make QBasicMutex be exclusively non-recursive
Dispatch to the recursive mutex functions from QMutex::lock, tryLock
and unlock.

This has the benefit that those using QBasicMutex will not go through
the testing for recursive mutexes. It simplifies a little the code for
those users.

For the users of QMutex, the code required to perform a lock does not
appear to change.

Thiago Macieira 870bd84a4e Don't recheck about timeout == 0 during mutex locking
If the timeout wasn't zero, it can only become zero if we return from
futex() with a non-timeout reason but subsequently expires while we're
recalculating something.

A side effect is that we try-lock a non-recursive mutex exactly
once. Before this change, we'd fastTryLock() twice even with
timeout == 0.

Thiago Macieira ab9fde6c0c Split the futexFlags() function in two: a hot and a cold path
We could mark the cold path with __attribute__((cold)) (since GCC 4.3),
but quick tests locally indicate that the compiler is smart enough to
determine that by itself.

It will inline the hot path in _q_futex, which in turn is inlined in the
lockInternal and unlockInternal functions, whereas the cold path is kept
outside.

Thiago Macieira c28204066c Mark mutex locking and unlocking functions with noexcept
Unlocking a mutex can never throw an exception. That doesn't make
sense and our code should make sure it can't happen. Right now,
provided that the system-level functions don't throw, we don't either.

Locking a mutex cannot throw on Linux because we use futexes
directly. A non-recursive mutex is just a futex, whereas a recursive
mutex uses a mutex (a futex) to manage a lock count.

However, on other platforms, due to the freelist, there can be memory
allocation, which means it might throw std::bad_alloc. Not because of
the freelist itself (that uses malloc and will just crash if malloc
fails) but because of Q_GLOBAL_STATIC. In 5.1, the global static will
be noexcept provided the type's constructor is so too (it is, in this
case).

Thiago Macieira caa22ff8ad Use nanosleep instead of pthread_cond_timedwait for thread sleeping
There's a comment saying nanosleep's availability is questionable, but
the information of what systems don't have that is now lost in
time. It's quite likely that they were older, Unix systems we no
longer support anyway.

nanosleep comes from POSIX.1b-1993, which is merged into POSIX.1-2001,
so chances are that it's supported almost everywhere where Qt runs
(except for Windows anyway).

which isn't the cheapest of the functions, at least the first time it's
run. So avoid calling it when in most scenarios, the name of the QObject
isn't set, and the information is purely for debugging.

Additionally, avoid allocating memory when setting the thread name to
the class name. The class name coming from the meta object is a static
constant string and we can use it directly.

Laszlo Papp 98804946f2 Make the "\internal" qdoc command stand on its own line
The qdoc manual currently claims that the command must stand on its own line.

The change follows the consistency with the rest and how the example looks like
inside the qdoc manual for this command.

Marc Mutz 0bd21a8111 QtCore: use new qEnvironmentVariableIs{Set,Empty}()
In particular, qEmergencyOut() is now completely exception-free.

Incidentally, this patch shows that Qt isn't consistent in how it
treats empty environment variables used as flags, but that is something
for a separate commit. This patch aims to be behaviour-preserving,
except in exceptional circumstances, of course.

Thiago Macieira 6bf4e448fe Mark all atomic functions as Q_DECL_NOTHROW
Actually, only the "new" atomics are marked. The old implementation,
based on qoldbasicatomic.h is unchanged, but should still work without a
problem.

The following configurations were tested and do work:
 - x86 64-bit
 - x86 32-bit
 - generic GCC
 - generic C++11 std::atomic
 - bootstrap
 - ARMv6 and 7
 - MIPS
 - MSVC 2010 32-bit
 - MSVC 2010 64-bit

The only two configurations untested are IA-64 and ARMv5. Except for
MSVC, all configurations were tested with GCC 4.6 (MIPS and ARM) and 4.7
(x86 and generics).

Thiago Macieira 2d9c2c0562 Add Q_DECL_NOTHROW to the atomic functions
These functions are inline (on most architectures) but they contain
inline assembly which the compiler could not understand. In any case,
if it decides not to inline them, it would need to generate exception
handlers.

Thiago Macieira 41379f9580 Don't export QAtomicInt, it's all inline
Moreover, exporting it causes the horrible side-effect on Windows
(with MSVC) that the compiler will not inline the functions, but
instead will place indirect calls to the functions in QtCore DLL,
even in release mode. For such a critical piece of code, inlining
is necessary.
