Fabian Kosmale 9483fcd68a QObject: Handle pointers to incomplete types in auto-connections
The code for the QMetaMethod queuedConnectionTypes overload relied on
QMetaMethod::parameterMetaType and QMetaType::flags() to detect whether
we're dealing with a pointer (and then use the VoidStar metatype instead).
However, if the type was incomplete when the slot was defined, and the
type was not registered when connect was called, we would not find a
metatype for the argument.
However, in that case we might still be able to handle the method, by
checking whether the type name of the arguments ends with a "*".
This patch does that, fixing a regression from 5.15.

This is a semantic patch using ClangTidyTransformator as in
qtbase/df9d882d41b741fef7c5beeddb0abe9d904443d8, but extended to
handle typedefs and accesses through pointers, too:

    auto hasTypeIgnoringPointer = [](auto type) { return anyOf(hasType(type), hasType(pointsTo(type))); };

    auto derivedFromAnyOfClasses = [&](ArrayRef<StringRef> classes) {

            return expr(hasTypeIgnoringPointer(hasUnqualifiedDesugaredType(recordType(hasDeclaration(decl))))).bind(o);
        };
        return exprOfDeclaredType(cxxRecordDecl(isSameOrDerivedFrom(hasAnyName(classes))));
    };

    auto renameMethod = [&] (ArrayRef<StringRef> classes,
                            StringRef from, StringRef to) {

                        changeTo(cat(access(o, cat(to)), "()")),
                        cat("use '", to, "' instead of '", from, "'"));
    };

    renameMethod(<classes>, "count", "size");

except that the on() matcher has been replaced by one that doesn't
ignoreParens().

Thiago Macieira 22d4c67234 QObject: attempt to fix a deadlock introduced by an earlier fix
Commit 71b4d4f150 is likely the source of
the issue. It fixed a race on disconnection, but kept the call to
disconnectNotify() (which is user code) inside the locked section. My
analysis is that by construction the sender object can't be undergoing
concurrent deletion anyway at this point. All call sites
(QObject::disconnect or the signal-slot activations but before the slot
is activated) imply that the user code that reached here cannot itself
be racing the deletion.

There may be one race condition left: if the same signal was connected
earlier to a slot via queued connection and that slot deletes the sender
asynchronously. A synchronous deletion is handled by doActivate(), so
the single-shot connection is never activated in the first place, but an
asynchronous deletion could race past that check and delete the sender
while QObjectPrivate::removeConnection is running. However, I'd call
this a mistake in user code.

[ChangeLog][QtCore][QObject] Fixed a regression from 6.3 that caused
QObject::isSignalConnected() to deadlock if called from inside
disconnectNotify().

Volker Hilsheimer 3be99799a6 Don't access QObjectPrivate::declarativeData unguarded
The QObjectPrivate::declarativeData member is stored in a union with
currentChildBeingDeleted. The QObject destructor always sets the
currentChildBeingDeleted member of the union. It also sets the
isDeletingChildren bool, which is the only way to find out which union
member we can safely access.

While the QObject destructor is deleting children and isDeletingChildren
is set, we must not access the declarativeData member of the union.

Add a test case that initializes the function pointers for the
declarative handlers and constructs a situation where an object
emits a signal while it is destroying children.

We dereference thisThreadData in the next line, at a point in time

so we need an acquire fence.

The alternative would be to re-arrange the code so that dereferencing
the pointer is delayed until after we verified it's this_thread's, but
that doesn't seem readily possible.

Even if it was easy, we'd first need to verify whether there are any
writes into QThreadData objects after they've been constructed, in
which case the acquire fence may be needed even in case it's 'ours'.

So just add the acquire fence.

No-one except two functions in qobject.cpp uses the object, and its

Remove it from QThreadData, move the class' definition to the unnamed

language zero out the members (as opposed to an STL algorithm call),
declare it constinit thread_local static, and adapt the two users
(basically, removing the retrieval of QThreadData::current()).

The `inline` keyword does not control inlining, as we all know (use
Q_ALWAYS_INLINE to force inlining, if required). However, it does
control the emission of the out-of-line copy of an inline function, if
the compiler did inline it where it got used: with the keyword, no copy
is required, which is our objective here.

Furthermore, we compile with -fvisibility-inlines-hidden with
GCC-compatible compilers (all but MSVC and Integrity's), which means
those functions will never be in the ABI of QtCore: they'll either have
been inlined with no out-of-line copy, or that out-of-line emission is

Marc Mutz 9da4c6bfb7 QObject: port setObjectName() to QAnyStringView
... while keeping the QString overload for users that pass actual
QStrings (e.g. QStringLiteral).

However, QString and QAnyStringView cannot be overloaded (they're
ambiguous for most arguments), so we need to make one of them a
Q_WEAK_OVERLOAD.

Normally, we'd make the new function weak and keep the old function
as-is, but, here, that would be beside the point, because all callers
would continue to resolve to the QString overload, and nothing would
call the QAnyStringView one.

So we really want the old function to be the Q_WEAK_OVERLOAD, so that
the QString overload is only selected when actual QStrings are
passed. That means we need to leave the old function in a compat build
(compiled in, but not visible in the public header). Since
Q_WEAK_OVERLOADs cannot be (easily) exported (they're templates), make
it call a private function (which can be, and is, exported).

Reviewers may questions whether one can overload

   setObjectName() and
   template <typename = void> setObjectName()

The answer is that we can, because templates mangle differently from
normal functions. We can even call the template function (with
explicit template arguments), as seen in removed_api.cpp.

This adapts the interface of the function to how most users use it:
They pass QLatin1String or just const char[]. Only very few passed
QStringLiteral, which, ignoring that fact that it produces a ton of
code for the temporary QString's destructor that's never executed,
would have been, and continues to be, the optimal way of passing data,
modulo plugin bugs (QTBUG-51602, QTBUG-49061).

[ChangeLog][QtCore][QObject] Added setObjectName() overload taking
QAnyStringView.

However, when an object is moved to a different thread, we need to

Fix this by also storing the binding status in QThreadPrivate and
updating the object's binding status when moved. This does only work
when the thread is already running, though. If it is not running, we
instead treat the QThreadPrivate's status pointer as a pointer to a

if there are pending objects, and update them at this point.

Giuseppe D'Angelo 9ea1f0f8b9 Fix qobject_cast on partially destroyed QWidget/QWindow
QWidget and QWindow use bits in QObjectPrivate to provide for a couple
of shortcuts -- one in qobject_cast, and another in the isWidgetType() /
isWindowType() functions in QObject. These can be optimized by simply
looking at the bits, without actually doing more expensive runtime
casts.

These bits were set on construction, but not unset on destruction. The
result was for instance that destroying a QWidget would report that the
object was still a QWidget when ~QObject was reached.

Fix this

1) by setting the bits only when QWidget / QWindow constructors start;

2) by resetting the bits once ~QWidget / ~QWindow are completed.
Technically speaking this is not 100% correct in the presence of data
members, but luckily those classes don't have any.

Amend an existing test for QWidget (whose comment said exactly the
opposite of what the test actually did) and add a test for QWindow.

Some other code was wrongly relying on isWidgetType() returning true
for destroyed QWidgets; amend it as needed.

[ChangeLog][QtCore][QObject] Using qobject_cast on partially constructed
or destroyed QWidget/QWindow instances now yields correct results.
Similarly, using the convenience isWidgetType() / isWindowType()
functions now correctly return false on such instances. Before,
qobject_cast (and the convenience functions) would erroneously report
that a given object was a QWidget (resp. QWindow) even during that
object's construction (before QObject's constructor had completed) or
destruction (after QWidget's (resp. QWindow's) destructors had been
completed). This was semantically wrong and inconsistent with other ways
of gathering runtime type information regarding such an object (e.g.
dynamic_cast, obj->metaObject()->className() and so on).

Like Q_NAMESPACE_EXPORT for Q_NAMESPACE, this variant of Q_GADGET
allows passing an export macro. This is useful to avoid exporting the

Before anyone asks: No, we don't need Q_OBJECT_EXPORT, because QObject
subclasses, being polymorphic, always need to have a class-level
export macro (to export their vtable), but while that technique also
works for value classes (the Q_GADGET audience), it is not desirable
for them, because it makes inline functions exported in Windows debug

Avoid the temporary QString creation in the caller and the repeated
QString::isNull() checks in the implementation by overloading
findChildren() without a name argument and checking for name.isNull()
only once, forking off into separate helper functions.

Adjust in-tree callers that used an explicit `QString()` argument in
order to pass options, which goes to show that `name` should never
have been the first argument of findChilden() in the first place, even
though I appreciate the symmetry with findChild() (the use-cases of
which, however, are radically different).

Giuseppe D'Angelo c2839843f2 QObject: cleanup the orphaned connection lists on destruction
When a signal/slot connection is broken, it gets added to the
sender's list of "orphaned connections", to clean up later.
This cleanup happens when the sender gets destroyed or as soon as
it emits any signal.

This may cause soft memory leaks in case receivers get destroyed,
and the sender is a long living object and doesn't emit signals
for a while (e.g. QThread).

For some reason, an explicit disconnection cleans up the list
(either by using the QMetaObject::Connection object, or in case
of string-based connect, using a string-based disconnect). This
raises lots of doubts about why having this list in the first
place.

Fix the soft-leak by cleaning up the orphaned connection list when
destroying a receiver.

Note: I still believe that we shouldn't have any "orphaned"
connection list, and rather cleanup on disconnect/deletion
(otherwise, emitting a signal may cause a CPU spike because it
triggers a cleanup). If we allow for any "impredictability" during
signal activation we're just admitting that signals/slots aren't
suitable for e.g. low-latency codepaths. That's why I'm not marking
the problem as fixed.

Alexandru Croitor 04df85bbec CMake: Get rid of the Core_qobject static library
The Core_qobject target was problematic for a few reasons.

In the very beginning, Core_qobject was an OBJECT library, explaining
its existence with the following comment "requires to spill internals
into users". The object library contained qobject.cpp and
qproperty.cpp and their manually generated moc files.
It was was a dependency of Core.

Afterwards it got converted into a static library instead, presumably
to circumvent some issues with metatype generation.

Unfortunately making it a static library was wrong, because it leads
to linker failures (undefined symbols) in a static Qt build when
trying to link a project that uses only QtCore.
Both Core and Core_qobject refer to each other's symbols, and
whichever library came first on the link line, many of its symbols
were discarded by the linker.

Transforming Core_qobject back into an object library could be an
option, but that leads to trouble with creating proper prl files
(our infrastructure doesn't quite support that for object libraries
yet).
Furthermore, there was some internal discussion and concern
about how to merge the two metatype json file lists (Core and
Core_qobject) into a single file.

Instead of using an object library, move qobject.cpp and qproperty.cpp
to be directly a part of Core again and remove the Core_qobject
target.

In order to do that, we have to circumvent some issues with
AUTOMOC.

First, we have to disable AUTOMOC for qobject.cpp and its headers.

qobject.cpp contains Q_GADGET, Q_NAMESPACE, etc keywords
in its doc comments. That confuses AUTOMOC, because it expects a
qobject.moc file which is not included by qobject.cpp.
See e2ff9e3b99 for some details
on the Q_GADGET + AUTOMOC issue.

We still need to run moc on on qobject.h and compile moc_qobject.cpp,
so we manually run moc on the header file. Because qobject.cpp
directly includes moc_qobject.cpp, we need to adjust the header
include path to the generated file.

Second, we remove the direct inclusion of moc_qnamespace.cpp
in qobject.cpp to prevent duplicate symbol compilation, because
the symbols were compiled both as part of qobject.cpp and
mocs_compilation.cpp.

Finally, because manual moc is used on qobject.h, the generated json
file needs to be explicitly passed to Core's metatype generation
step.

Lars Knoll 6778b247a8 Add a QBindingStorage class
QBindingStorage is a class that can store a set of binding objects
for the properties of a QObject. This will get used to reduce the
memory overhead of the property system when adding bindable properties
to QObject based classes.

The binding storage has a pointer to the TLS entry containing the
currently evaluating binding. Like that we avoid repeated TLS
lookups and reduce the overhead of the property system to one
pointer lookup and one compare for the case that properties
aren't being used.

Each QObject now owns one binding storage object, that can be used to
store binding data for properties that members of the QObject.

Giuseppe D'Angelo 11b8c46d2a QObject: add a single shot connection flag
If one needed to listen to a signal just once, one had to
store the QMetaObject::Connection object returned by connect()
and use it to disconnect the slot after the first signal
activation.

This has led to a proliferation of using wrappers (and enough
TMP); they usually look like this:

1) create a shared_ptr<QMO::Connection>, allocating its payload;
2) create a lambda, capturing the shared_ptr by value;
3) in the lambda, disconnect the connection (through the shared_ptr),
   and call the actual slot;
4) connect the signal to the lambda, storing the returned
   QMO::Connection into the shared_ptr.

This is expensive, error prone for newcomers, and tricky to
support as a general facility inside one's projects.
We can do better, just support single shot connections right
in QObject.

[ChangeLog][QtCore][QObject] Added the Qt::SingleShotConnection
flag. When a connection is established with this flag set,
the slot is going to be activated at most once; when the signal
is emitted, the connection gets automatically broken by Qt.

As there is now a chance that a QMetaMethod already contains the
metatypes for its arguments, we can just query it directly (and use the
fallback to name lookup logic that already exists there).
This also allows us to avoid creating a QList of names, and only
requires us to do a name lookup in case the connection actually fails.

Fabian Kosmale fa987d4441 MetaObject: Store the QMetaType of the methods
This does the analog of 46f407126e for the
methods we care about (signals, slots, Q_INVOKABLEs). In addition to the
actual QMetaType, we store an array with offsets so that we later can do
a mapping from methodIndex to metatype.

The newly added QMetaMethod::{return,parameter}MetaType methods can then
be used to retrieve the metatypes.

This does however require that all involved types are complete. This is
unfortunately not a feasible requirement. Thus, we only populate the
metatype array on a best effort basis. For any incomplete type, we store
QMetaType::Unknown. Then, when accessing the metatype, we fall back to
the old string based code base if it's Unknown.

Squashes "moc: support incomplete types" and "Fix compile failures
after QMetaMethod change"
