Giuseppe D'Angelo 7d4d47de70 QObject::connect(): fail to connect to a functor if UniqueConnection is passed
The connect() documentation makes it clear that UniqueConnection does
not work with free functions / function objects and the like; only with
actual PMFs. Rather than silently *ignoring* the flag, be vocal about its
presence by warning, and make the connection fail (as the user has
passed an illegal argument).

[ChangeLog][QtCore][QObject] QObject::connect() now will refuse to
connect a signal to a free function / function object if UniqueConnection
is passed. Note that UniqueConnection has never worked for such
connections -- the flag was simply ignored, and they were established
multiple times. Now, the flag is not ignored and results in a connection
failure (as well as a runtime warning by Qt).

Marc Mutz 2b50c8bec0 QObject: optimize the common case of findChildren(QString())
Outside tests, all in-tree callers of QObject::findChildren() pass no
name to match, and in my experience that is also true for the vast
majority of out-of-tree users.

Avoid the temporary QString creation in the caller and the repeated
QString::isNull() checks in the implementation by overloading
findChildren() without a name argument and checking for name.isNull()
only once, forking off into separate helper functions.

Adjust in-tree callers that used an explicit `QString()` argument in
order to pass options, which goes to show that `name` should never
have been the first argument of findChilden() in the first place, even
though I appreciate the symmetry with findChild() (the use-cases of
which, however, are radically different).

Change a `findChildren().size() == 0` call found while scanning for
findChildren() calls to `!findChild()` as a drive-by.

Modernize loops in the various qt_qFindChild{,ren}_helper() overloads
to match how the new code looks.

[ChangeLog][QtCore][QObject] Added findChildren() overload taking no
name (thus optimizing this common case).

Giuseppe D'Angelo c2839843f2 QObject: cleanup the orphaned connection lists on destruction
When a signal/slot connection is broken, it gets added to the
sender's list of "orphaned connections", to clean up later.
This cleanup happens when the sender gets destroyed or as soon as
it emits any signal.

This may cause soft memory leaks in case receivers get destroyed,
and the sender is a long living object and doesn't emit signals
for a while (e.g. QThread).

For some reason, an explicit disconnection cleans up the list
(either by using the QMetaObject::Connection object, or in case
of string-based connect, using a string-based disconnect). This
raises lots of doubts about why having this list in the first
place.

Fix the soft-leak by cleaning up the orphaned connection list when
destroying a receiver.

Note: I still believe that we shouldn't have any "orphaned"
connection list, and rather cleanup on disconnect/deletion
(otherwise, emitting a signal may cause a CPU spike because it
triggers a cleanup). If we allow for any "impredictability" during
signal activation we're just admitting that signals/slots aren't
suitable for e.g. low-latency codepaths. That's why I'm not marking
the problem as fixed.

Alexandru Croitor 04df85bbec CMake: Get rid of the Core_qobject static library
The Core_qobject target was problematic for a few reasons.

In the very beginning, Core_qobject was an OBJECT library, explaining
its existence with the following comment "requires to spill internals
into users". The object library contained qobject.cpp and
qproperty.cpp and their manually generated moc files.
It was was a dependency of Core.

Afterwards it got converted into a static library instead, presumably
to circumvent some issues with metatype generation.

Unfortunately making it a static library was wrong, because it leads
to linker failures (undefined symbols) in a static Qt build when
trying to link a project that uses only QtCore.
Both Core and Core_qobject refer to each other's symbols, and
whichever library came first on the link line, many of its symbols
were discarded by the linker.

Transforming Core_qobject back into an object library could be an
option, but that leads to trouble with creating proper prl files
(our infrastructure doesn't quite support that for object libraries
yet).
Furthermore, there was some internal discussion and concern
about how to merge the two metatype json file lists (Core and
Core_qobject) into a single file.

Instead of using an object library, move qobject.cpp and qproperty.cpp
to be directly a part of Core again and remove the Core_qobject
target.

In order to do that, we have to circumvent some issues with
AUTOMOC.

First, we have to disable AUTOMOC for qobject.cpp and its headers.

qobject.cpp contains Q_GADGET, Q_NAMESPACE, etc keywords
in its doc comments. That confuses AUTOMOC, because it expects a
qobject.moc file which is not included by qobject.cpp.
See e2ff9e3b99 for some details
on the Q_GADGET + AUTOMOC issue.

We still need to run moc on on qobject.h and compile moc_qobject.cpp,
so we manually run moc on the header file. Because qobject.cpp
directly includes moc_qobject.cpp, we need to adjust the header
include path to the generated file.

Second, we remove the direct inclusion of moc_qnamespace.cpp
in qobject.cpp to prevent duplicate symbol compilation, because
the symbols were compiled both as part of qobject.cpp and
mocs_compilation.cpp.

Finally, because manual moc is used on qobject.h, the generated json
file needs to be explicitly passed to Core's metatype generation
step.

QBindingStorage is a class that can store a set of binding objects
for the properties of a QObject. This will get used to reduce the
memory overhead of the property system when adding bindable properties
to QObject based classes.

The binding storage has a pointer to the TLS entry containing the
currently evaluating binding. Like that we avoid repeated TLS
lookups and reduce the overhead of the property system to one
pointer lookup and one compare for the case that properties
aren't being used.

Each QObject now owns one binding storage object, that can be used to
store binding data for properties that members of the QObject.

Giuseppe D'Angelo 11b8c46d2a QObject: add a single shot connection flag
If one needed to listen to a signal just once, one had to
store the QMetaObject::Connection object returned by connect()
and use it to disconnect the slot after the first signal
activation.

This has led to a proliferation of using wrappers (and enough
TMP); they usually look like this:

1) create a shared_ptr<QMO::Connection>, allocating its payload;
2) create a lambda, capturing the shared_ptr by value;
3) in the lambda, disconnect the connection (through the shared_ptr),
   and call the actual slot;
4) connect the signal to the lambda, storing the returned
   QMO::Connection into the shared_ptr.

This is expensive, error prone for newcomers, and tricky to
support as a general facility inside one's projects.
We can do better, just support single shot connections right
in QObject.

[ChangeLog][QtCore][QObject] Added the Qt::SingleShotConnection
flag. When a connection is established with this flag set,
the slot is going to be activated at most once; when the signal
is emitted, the connection gets automatically broken by Qt.

Fabian Kosmale fa987d4441 MetaObject: Store the QMetaType of the methods
This does the analog of 46f407126e for the
methods we care about (signals, slots, Q_INVOKABLEs). In addition to the
actual QMetaType, we store an array with offsets so that we later can do
a mapping from methodIndex to metatype.

The newly added QMetaMethod::{return,parameter}MetaType methods can then
be used to retrieve the metatypes.

This does however require that all involved types are complete. This is
unfortunately not a feasible requirement. Thus, we only populate the
metatype array on a best effort basis. For any incomplete type, we store
QMetaType::Unknown. Then, when accessing the metatype, we fall back to
the old string based code base if it's Unknown.

Squashes "moc: support incomplete types" and "Fix compile failures
after QMetaMethod change"

Giuseppe D'Angelo 782df5b41d Make QObjectPrivate::threadData a proper atomic
QObjectPrivate::threadData used to be a QThreadData *, and was
read and written from multiple threads without proper synchronization.
As an example, it was read from QCoreApplication::postEvent and
written from QObject::moveToThread, therefore causing UB.

Port threadData to a proper atomic, removing the races. Fix all usage
points.

In general, QObject is documented to be simply reentrant,
not thread-safe, and certain bits (e.g. timers, moveToThread)
are not even reentrant. The reasoning therefore is that a given
QObject's threadData is not supposed to be touched by multiple
threads without some synchronization happening elsewhere, and
therefore relaxed loads should be sufficient.

As drive-by change: refactor QCoreApplication::postEvent.
It was particularly subtle, because it had a loop using a volatile
to cope with the possibility of the receiver object switching thread
while we tried to lock its thread's event queue.

However, volatile does not achieve any synchronization, so drop it,
and refactor the algorithm using better locking primitives.
Put this algorithm in a common place, and also reuse it from
removePostedEvents, which was lacking any synchronization.

As exposed by tst_QObjectRace::destroyRace we would sometimes end up

Since we can be in a separate thread from the receiver we should lock
before referencing the connection object.

Volker Hilsheimer b7d073e990 Refactor memory allocation for arguments of QMetaCallEvents
There are two cases:

In a BlockingQueuedConnection, QMetaCallEvent doesn't allocate memory
and instead passes already existing pointers through. A QSemaphore
is used to serialize data access between threads. So the constructor
taking a QSemaphore can be simplified to only accept an existing arg
array.

In a QueuedConnection, QMetaCallEvent needs to make deep copies of
the arguments, and memory needs to be allocated based on the number
of arguments. The previous code put the burden of memory allocation
on the code generating the event, while the memory was free'd by
~QMetaCallEvent. Instead, make it QMetaCallEvent's responsibility
to allocate and free the memory as needed, and adjust the code
generating QMetaCallEvents.

We can allocate the memory for types and pointers to arguments in a
single block, starting with the space for the array of void*, followed
by the space for the array of integers to avoid byte alignment issues.
By pre-allocating the space that's needed by three arguments, we can
avoid all mallocs for the majority of QMetaCallEvents.

Until this change has propagated through qt5.git, we need to keep the
old API that is still used by QtDeclarative around. Once QtDeclarative
has migrated to the new API, it can be removed.

It also _has_ to be, because we recommend to use deleteLater() to delete
QObjects that live in another thread:

Quoting the ~QObject() docs:

> Warning: Deleting a QObject while pending events are waiting to be delivered
> can cause a crash. You must not delete the QObject directly if it exists in
> a different thread than the one currently executing. Use deleteLater()
> instead, which will cause the event loop to delete the object after all
> pending events have been delivered to it.

If deleteLater() is not thread-safe, it cannot be used for one of its intended
purposes.

Giuseppe D'Angelo f66c1db16c Introduce Q_NAMESPACE_EXPORT
A recurring problem with the Q_NAMESPACE macro is that it declares
an object (staticMetaObject) in the surrounding namespace. That
object lacks any export/import qualification to make it usable
with shared libraries.

Introduce therefore another macro to work around this issue, allowing
the user to prefix the object with an exporting macro, f.i. like this:

Q_NAMESPACE_EXPORT(Q_CORE_EXPORT)

The old macro can simply then be rewritten in terms of this new one,
supplying an empty export macro.

Note that NOT passing an argument to a macro expecting one is well
defined behavior in C99 -- the macro will expand an empty token.
Of course, MSVC doesn't like this and emits warnings. As a
workaround, use a variadic macro.

[ChangeLog][QtCore] Added the new Q_NAMESPACE_EXPORT macro. It
can be used just like Q_NAMESPACE to add meta-object information
to a namespace; however it also supports exporting of such
information from shared libraries.

[ChangeLog][Potentially Source-Incompatible Changes] Prefixing
Q_NAMESPACE with an export macro may no longer work. Use the new
Q_NAMESPACE_EXPORT macro for that use case.

Mitch Curtis 574b56913f Doc: mention that some filtered events need to be explicitly accepted
QKeyEvent's detailed description already documents this:

"A key event contains a special accept flag that indicates whether the
receiver will handle the key event. This flag is set by default for
QEvent::KeyPress and QEvent::KeyRelease, so there is no need to call
accept() when acting on a key event. For QEvent::ShortcutOverride the
receiver needs to explicitly accept the event to trigger the override.
Calling ignore() on a key event will propagate it to the parent widget.
The event is propagated up the parent widget chain until a widget
accepts it or an event filter consumes it."

However, someone looking at eventFilter() won't see this, resulting in
the shortcut not being consumed and propagating elsewhere, so mention
it in the docs for eventFilter() too.

Kari Oikarinen a952fd7d5b QObject: Fix isSignalConnected() when signals have been disconnected
The bitmap cache for the first 64 signals being connected was only set when the
connection is added. It was never unset when the connection was removed.

Internal use of the connectedSignals bitmap is not hurt by it occasionally
saying a signal is connected even though it is not, since the purpose of those
checks is avoiding expensive operations that are not necessary if nothing is
connected to the signal.

However, the public API using this cache meant that it also never spotted
signals being disconnected. This was not documented. Fix the behavior by only
using the cache if it is up to date. If it is not, use a slower path that gives
the correct answer.

To avoid making disconnections and QObject destructions slower, the cache is
only updated to unset disconnected signals when new signal connections are
added. No extra work is done in the common case where signals are only
removed in the end of the QObject's lifetime.

Martin Smith 4ca0d76454 doc: clang-qdoc must not see certain function declarations
The macro Q_DECLARE_INTERFACE declared some qobject_cast() functions
that clang-qdoc must not see in the contexts where the macro is used.
This update prevents that from happening by ensuring that Q_CLANG_QDOC
is not defined when the macro is defined.

This update also adds a \fn command for a declaration of qobject_cast()
that was missing in the documentation. There are two versions of the
function, one with a const parameter and one with a non-const parameter,
and they both share one qdoc comment.

Martin Smith efdcc88462 doc: Change invokeMethod() comments to work with clang
There were four dummy declarations for struct QMetaObject that were
needed by old qdoc to allow documentation of some very complicated
function signatures that old qdoc could not parse. clangqdoc can now
parse these signatures, but, unfortunately, old qdoc is still used to
parse \fn commands in .cpp and .qdoc files, so the dummy declarations
are still needed in struct QMetaObject. However, clangqdoc now
sees that two of the four dummy declarations are actually duplicates
of the other two, and then old qdoc complains when it can't find all
four of the function nodes, when it parses the four \fn commands.
This update removes the duplicate dummy declarations and the two
redundant \fn comments. The remaining two \fn comments are
updated accordingly.

This change also moves a couple of qdoc comments so they are located
with the function definitions that they are documenting.

Lars Knoll 993b049adf Get rid of the locking in activate()
Removing connections and resizing the signal vector now
happens in a way that will not interfere with activate(),
as the old objects won't get deleted if we are somewhere
inside a signal emission.

This means that we don't need to lock the senders mutex
in activate anymore, as long as the reference counting
on the ConnectionData is atomic and we are in the senders
thread.

This implies that we now need to lock the receivers mutex in
queued_activate() abd blocking queued activation to ensure
it hasn't been deleted while we are emitting.

In addition, some precautions need to be taken to not read
from the receiver without holding the lock, as it could get
deleted while we're activating (if it's in a different thread).
To make that possible store the receivers thread id in the
connection data.

Use atomic pointers for all variables that can get modified
with the signalSlotLock() held and that are being read
without the lock being held.

This gives us a very nice additional speed improvement
for signal emissions.
